THE EU’S ENERGY EFFICIENCY DIRECTIVE

The EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive comes into force on 1st January 2018; which dictates that all gas-fired heating appliances and room heater stove appliances manufactured for sale in the EU must comply with a minimum efficiency standard. We have created this document to provide clarification and help to understand what the Directive means.

What is EcoDesign?
From 1st January 2018, all gas-fired heating appliances and roomheater stove appliances manufactured for sale in the EU must comply with a minimum efficiency standard under Lot 20 of the Energy Efficiency Directive.
The regulations will still apply even when the United Kingdom leaves the EU in 2019.
Under the new regulations, all gas-fired heating appliances and roomheater stove appliances must be supplied with an energy label which details the appliance energy efficiency class (EEC), similar to those found on lightbulbs, washing machines and other products or appliances.
The label must be a set size and colour and will include the manufacturer’s name, the energy efficiency class of the fire and the direct heat output in kW.

There are also rules relating to the technical documentation provided, including the need for a product datasheet, and the way in which manufacturers advertise or promote their products – they must include a reference to the energy efficiency class for the model.

How is the energy efficiency class determined?
The energy efficiency class (EEC) is determined via testing and calculation which takes into account the energy efficiency of the product in relation to the fuel input. No gas fire will achieve an A rating under the new criteria, therefore products will likely appear ‘less efficient’ to the customer than they did before the regulations as only the useful efficiency of the product was displayed.

The use of gas appliances has major benefits, including that gas is approximately a third less in cost terms than electricity, emissions affecting air quality are much less than solid fuels and wood, and of course gas is clean in the home and easy to use.
